With the old forum coming to an end, I'm starting to move things over. I may have some new stuff to post if I'm in the mood to.
This topic is about FE-related Internet fads and other FE-related stuff seen online.
Most stuff have their origin in the 2ch message board*, and personally speaking, I'd say they're actually quite funny compared to most of the more pointless English language memes. At least these FE stuff are actually laughing at something.
*2ch, full name 2channel (Ni Channeru). An anonymous message board of which lots of Japanese internet fads come from; think of it as the grandfather of the Western 4chan, but without any image functions. Not to be confused with 2chan (Futaba Channel), created when 2ch was down as a replacement, which is an image board of which 4chan is derived from.
I'll start from introducing some of these.
"Know your limit" - 身の程をわきまえよ (Mi no hodo o wakimae yo)
Radiant Dawn,Part 1 Endgame, Black Knight versus Jarod. EDIT - Should be Part 1 Chapter 9.
In respond to Jarod's attempt to fight him, Black Knight replied,
"You think you can be my opponent? Know your limit." (FE Dictionary / JP / site contains spoilers)
This phrase has since been used by 2ch users for a lot of situations, such as:
FE1/11:
FE10:
FE6:
FE4:
FE8:
SSBB:
FE7:
FE9:
FE6:
FE4/5:
FE11/12:
FE7:
FE7:
(Nico Nico Pedia dic.nicovideo.jp/a/身の程をわきまえよ)
By the way, the English script contains no such line from the Black Knight.
EDIT - As Elchi pointed out, the English version does have this line. I didn't look into one chapter before, forgetting that the Black Knight fought Jarod there as well.
Shikkoku House - しっこくハウス
The residence in Chapter 9 of Path of Radiance in which the Black Knight shows up whenever the house or the boss is reached. This surprised a lot of players, especially those who are new to FE9 and those trying to recruit Zihark. No one at the point can survive him, except maybe Mist with her Miracle skill, so it's pretty much a reset for everyone who ever stumble into that house. If Mist or Ike (learning Miracle from a scroll) happens to survive his attack, a special conversation will be triggered.
What if you block the house he shows up in? Well...
Another related meme is the Shikkoku no Mori (しっこくの森), which takes its name from Doubutsu no Mori (Animal Crossing), and refers to Part 1 Chapter 9 in Radiant Dawn, in which he has to protect Micaiah in a forest.
Ike, stay back!
Has to do with Greil's English voice. It's... interesting.
Ike... father of Sothe's children
Original: Right. Lord Ike, "hero" of the Crimean Liberation, leader of the Greil Mercenaries, and father of Sothe's children...
Radiant Dawn, Part 1 Chapter 4. Ever since Sothe's return to Micaiah's side, he has been speaking highly of Ike (game script from FEPlanet), much to Micaiah's annoyance. So when the group meets Nailah and Rafiel and Sothe suggests they look for Ike to tag with him and reach Gallia, where Lorazieh, Reyson and Leanne live (things didn't work that way in the end). In the Japanese version, Micaiah simply added comments on who Ike is - the guy who is worshipped as the hero of Crimea and the leader of the Greil Mercenaries. The English version, however, has her comment much more fitting to the situation at the time: yeah, Ike, the hero of everything, and definitely Sothe's lover. If you love him so much, why don't you marry him?
What would happen if Ike and Sothe do get married? This deviantART fan work might answer it (those from FEDA should have seen it already).
Villager Number 3 - 村人その3 (Murabito sono san) / Normal Archer Number Three in the English version
In FE7, Wil says this to Rath to indicate his being nothing special, leading to the otherwiser serious Rath laugh.
I'm demon sword! - 俺は魔剣! (Ore wa maken)
One of Chrom's critical/occult attack voice clips. It is meant to be "俺は負けん!" (I won't lose!), but they are pronounced the same in Japanese (and it is a voice clip). The funnier interpretation is more adopted, of course.
There are a lot more FE13-based memes out there, mostly involving their supports and dialogs in other places.
But, Jurge - だが、ジュルジュよ。 (Daga, Juruju yo)
FE3 and FE12, Chapter 16. When Jeorge recruits Astoria, Astoria said this line. Even though this is just a typo, fans wonder how must Jeorge feel when his friend mispronounces his name.
In other places of the same conversation, Jeorge's name (ジョルジュ) is spelt correctly.
Now, memes targeting at individual units. I wanted to post this earlier, but I had schoolwork to do. Yesterday was a stormy day and my university had to close earlier, making the deadline deadlier.
I'll talk about these following units:
Arden (FE4)
Wolt (FE6)
Cecilia (FE6)
Eliwood (FE7)
Innes (FE8)
Sothe (FE9, 10)
Gromell (FE9)
Stefan (FE9, 10)
Cord (FE11, 12)
Jeorge (FE11)
Frederick (FE13)
Arden: Sturdy, strong, slow! - 固い、強い、おそい!
Katai, tsuyoi, osoi
Alec's comment on Arden in the prologue of FE4. High defense, high strength, low movement and speed. This is typical of armour knights in FE, and because speed is everything in the series, players tend to remember the "slow" part of them.
He's also noted to be ugly and isn't part of any of the holy bloodlines. This makes most players ignore him when it comes to pairing the 1st generation units.
Wolt: Wo-ru-to - ヲルト
The use of the semi-deprecated kana "ヲ/を" is an existing 2ch habit. The sound "wo" is usually transliterated "ウォ" instead. That said, Wolt's name is originally spelt ウォルト in FE6.
So what's with him? Simply put: bad base, bad growths, worse than his promoted counterpart.
Wolt is Roy's milk-brother and Rebecca's son, who serves in Roy's team as their archer.
(Drat, I accidentally pressed something on the keyboard and now I have to retype from the last draft. Fortunately, it's only the rest of this part and the beginning of the next. Apparently, even though the world's best browser often protects me against such goofs, it doesn't always work.)
So let's go back... basically, he's laughable because of his incompetence compared to:
- Igrene, for Wolt's lower stats as a level 1 Sniper (he'll eventually catch up, though)
- Klein, for Wolt's lower eventual stats with the hard mode bonus (for enemies, including the ones that will join the player) applied
- Fellow archer Dorothy, mostly at strength
- Nomads like Sue and Sin, for they will easily cap stats and are much better at speed
Even with these, he is well-liked by some fans. One went on to have a playthrough that uses only him and later, Yodel.
By the way, in FE13, units not native to the playable team can be registered on a list, and later be bought in the same or other files. The price gets higher or lower depending on the unit's stats and skills. Wolt is worth the least - only 1200G.
Cecilia: Cecilia-san - セシリアさん
Cecilia is Etruia's Mage General, and thus Pent's successor. She taught Lilina magic and Roy swordplay (because he's not talented, and Cecilia thought he'd give up when seeing Lilina handling magic so well) in Ostia. "セシリアさん" is the way Roy calls her, and fans adopted this way of calling her. Like all of Etruia's Three Generals, she's incompetent. In her case,
- In Chapter 13, she attempted to stop Zephiel, the Spinning King (fan name), but failed miserably. Same for the Hasha no Tsuruga manga.
- Later in Chapter 14, she joined in a desert stage, where horseback units are undesirable.
- She's worse than the other of the Three Generals (even though they're no good to start with), and worse than Clarine when promoted.
- Bad stats, of course.
Eilwood: Eli-something - エリなんとか
Eri nantoka
In FE9 Cahpter 11, after the chapter, two townspeople talked to enemy sniper Norris about Elincia, with the rest of Ike's group, boarding Nasir's ship. One of them said,
Japanese:「やつらは確か、エリ…なんとかと呼びかけておった気が……」"If I'm not mistaken, they called her something like Eli... something like that"
Overseas: Her name was... Ellie? Ellen? They called her something like that.
Now back to Eliwood. Among the three lords in FE7, Eliwood is an average one, unlike Hector who specializes in strength and defense, and Lyn who specializes in skill and speed. Having no special merit is a demerit in itself to a lot of FE players, and Eliwood also has this problem of possibly being doubled by the final boss dragon if he's too weak. On the other hand, there's no way for him to double the dragon with Durandal (aka Fat Sword) and without a Body Ring. So you can't double the dragon, nor will you deal much damage. No wonder players intentionally forget your name.
By the way, Eliwood has another non-derogatory nickname: 襟木 (pronounced Eliwood). "襟" (eri) means collar (the one you have on clothing), and "木" (original kun'yomi moku and on'yomi ki) means wood. Take the pronounciation of the first character and the meaning of the second, and you get Eliwood. Used mostly to save physical space. Hector also has a similar name, "㌶" (ヘクタール / Hectare put into one character's space - a lot of units of measurment get this treatment).
Innes: Actually a nice person - 実はいい人
Jitsu wa iihito
Innes's character description in the R button help ballon:
Japanese: フレリア王国の王子。自信家で口が悪いが、実はいい人。 (Frelia Kingdom's prince. Arrogant and thus foul-mouthed, but actually a nice person.)
Overseas: The prince of Frelia. He's brash and arrogant, but good at heart.
Laughed at because of not only his bad starting stats, growths and career choice, but also his personality does not fit that of a sniper (Eirika points out that in their support conversation as well). He speaks of breaking out of the enemy in Eirika's route, and would actively protect the mercenaries he hired and Eirika. Even though he's a sniper.
This also gave birth to another meme...
Innes again: Help, Eirika! - 助けてエイリーク!
In Innes and Eirika's support, he talks about guarding Eirika. To this, Eirika replied, "Uh, wait a moment, Innes. You're an archer... Wouldn't it make more sense if you stayed behind me?"
Indeed, since Innes is a sniper, and thus isn't able to use anything other than a bow, he wouldn't be able to do anything when surrounded by enemies. And to make things worse, he's the only playable unit in the game to have no way to directly attack - Neimi can class change to a Forrest Knight (Ranger), and most players do that. Fighting with Frelia's national treasure? Sorry Innes, no, even though you're Frelia's prince.
助けてエイリーク! has since been expanded to describe any situation in which a bow unit is surrpunded by enemies (and walls).
Sothe: Zephyr (LOL) - 緑風(笑)
Midorikaze kakko* warai (*kakko: bracket)
緑風 (midorikaze / literally "green wind") is Sothe's title in the ending of Radiant Dawn. The snipers in this post may be laughed at, but at least they can be useful in the hands of very dedicated players. But Sothe? Here's how the player would get to learn about him (taken from Nico Nico Pedia):
Path of Radiance:
Beginning
What's with him? Such weak stats to start with...
What's this? Blossom? So this is Radd position coming? (Radd: Mercenary and Caesar's friend, known for his high, speed-centric growths)
Level up
XDDDD That growth's like cheating XDDDDDDD
What Manakete is you!?!?!? Gonna train you!!!!
Level 20
Um... huh? The level's stopped raising...? Ah I know!!
In a while he'll get a scripted class change! Just like Ike and Volke!!
Late game
Still no class change... Even Ike and Volke have changed their class, but...
...Ah, enemy. Wait, my side's so weak? After I focused on him so much...
...Nah, it's time to see him class changed! Time to see the reward for all that!
Final chapter
...No class change for him in the end..........................
*cries*
Radiant Dawn:
Opening movie
Cool! Grown up Sothe!!!
Will sure become something great!
1-Prologue
Whoa!! Great initial stats! Isn't this the Jeigan position?
Own everything as a thief!!!!!!!!!
Mid-Part 1
Huh...? Using him this much seems unreasonable...
I've got this feeling that things wouldn't go so well...
1-Endgame
XDDDDD Black Knight's here!! So strong!!
Sothe? That beancurd? Not using him anymore!
3-6
Ultra-beancurd. Ultra-weak. Nothing to steal. Ultra-useless. Still required to be used.
Tibarn
Resist, will ya? So this guy's taken hostage and wouldn't speak xDDD
4-Prologue
Okay, alright... I've had enough with him... Required in the chapter again? But he's so weak...
Heather's been class changed before, but him...?
Oh... Alright, he class changed! Yesh! Alright, let's see the true power of Blossom! Gotta see gotta see!
.............Just a common class...........
And on top of that...... Volke's got a special class..........
And still needed in the final chapter? I don't want him anymore...........
Sother suffers so much from... a lot of things, really. He's a whisper. This means that he gets Bane, which when activated will make sure he won't kill the enemy, no mater how weak that enemy is. This also means he gets much lower skill and speed than Volke does. And because of the chapters he shows up in, he's even worse than Heather, not to mention Volke. And then there's his famous line "ミカヤは俺が守る" (Micaiah is mine to protect), which fans often change to "ミカヤが俺を守る" (Micaiah gets me protected). Nico Nico Pedia also quptes the following comparison between the two:
Volke
- Exclusive class, exclusive battle animation
- Debuts in Izuka's farm and can easily reach the max level
- Initial stats similar to the other player-raised characters
- Will not get attacked thanks to his skill Stillness
- Highest critical boost of all units
- Skill that occasionally gets enemies killed: Lethality
- Will honestly return 20000G in Endgame
Sothe
- Main character, but no exclusive class, no exclusive animation
- Debuts in a map where he can steal lots of vulneraries
- Gets to be player-raised all the way to having the low stat limits reached
- Will likely get attacked by the Endgame spirits thanks to his stats
- Highest meme-inducing ability of all units
- Skill that occasionally gets enemies not killed: Bane
- Will honestly offer 1200G from selling Kard early-game
Gromell: General Boltaxe - ボルトアクス将軍
Borutoakusu shougun
A video of him was linked to before, in the first post. So what's so funny about him? (FE9 late-game spoiler:)
Later, in FE13, the Bolt Axe has got much better treatment. It's forgeable, has an excellent starting might of 14, and some axe users like battle monks can make good use of those. Given those and the other ways IS treated this weapon in the game, it's likely that they're officially acknowledging this gag (like several other FE-based memes).
Stefan: Sonkeru-sensei - ソンケル先生
Finally, a meme that doesn't ridicule people. The name ソンケル先生 comes from a fan-hosted poll that misspelt Stefan's Japanese version name ソーンバルケ (Soanvalcke) to "ソンケルバーン". The reason that he, other than the name misspelling, caught fame, is pretty much the same as him getting known in Western sites like deviantART: he lives in the sand.
Cord: Dark Maji - ダークマジ
Wordplay on Dark Mage (ダークマージ) referring to Cord (Maji in the Japanese version) reclassed to Dark Mage. The reason of doing so, especially in FE11, is that his personal magic growth rate, 10%, is high, when most people have 0% or 5%. In FE12, a good number of physical units have a magic growth rate of 10%, and some magic users go better than that, so his advantage is less apparent.
Jeorge: Continent's Number 1 (LOL) - 大陸一(笑)
Tairiku ichi kakko warai
The games' endings call Jeorge "大陸一の弓騎士" (tairiku ichi no yumikishi / the continent's best bow knight), and Gordin calls him "大陸一の弓使い" (tairiku ichi no yumitsukai / the continent's best bow user). Originally, he's a sniper with medicore stats and bad growths, but still served as a good replacement in case the player failed with Gordin and Tomas. At the time, most players didn't question his position as the continent's best.
And then came FE11. In the 2008 game, stat caps cary between units, while stats always cap at 20 in FE1 and FE3 (and FE5 as well). This makes growth rates more important than before, especially for units with low starting stats. Other units like warriors and generals can use bows too, and probably have better stats. To make things worse, FE11 introduced reclassing. Cavaliers, abundant in FE11, can class change to archers if they want to. You can easily get a better archer than him by reclassing just about anyone.
His situation became better in FE12, with better growth rates for eveyone in the game and a lot of enemy flying dragons (produced-for-battle Manaketes with a whopping move of 12) show up later in the game. But then, there's Astoria misspelling his name. Online comments laughing at him continued. Some players call him "[大陸一の弓]使い" ([the continent's best bow] user), which is an accurate description of him - he possess Parthia in FE12.
Frederick: Frede-meat - フレデ肉
Furedeniku
Frederick is the overprotective second-in-charge of Chrom's vigilante force, the Shepherds. (FE13 early-game spoiler:)
Alright, now for some more... These are less of memes and more of amusing sightings of the games.
Tsue-poko - 杖ポコ
This is how staves should be used.
Part of FE10's mechanic that surprised players. Normally, staff users are known for their inability to attack. But in a pre-release game show featuring a playable demo, players saw Laura bravely fighting back enemies with her staff - in contrary to the usual "cannot attack" impression given by healers. This has thus left a strong impression to FE veterans.
To make things better, fighting in this fashion gives battle experience and weapon experience, does not affect the staff's durability, and higher-ranked staves will critical a lot.
And thus we have these:
<-- Shameless self-advertising, this is my vid (and yes, that's a level 14, maxed Laura)
The best unit to use this is actually Ilyana, since her strength growth is high for a sage.
Speaking of Staves, in FE5 even ordinary healing staves can miss because of the game's imposed maximum hit rate of 99, which applies to staves as well.
So this is the trap. I don't feel anything... - ここか 『仕掛け』といっても 特に何も・・・
FE Dictionary entry (JP)
The stock phrase in FE6 for when someone stands on a trap switch. Despite the speech pattern vary a lot by characters (like Gonzales's "I... I Gonzales."), the same stock phrase is used by everyone. This makes the line looks strange when certain characters are put to wait on the trap switch.
Fixed in FE7, which gave everyone their unique line when waiting on switches.
Chapter 24: Reunion - 戦場の再会
FE9's Chapter 24. Infamous for its Maniac mode difficulty. In Maniac, there are lots of enemies right from the start, all with very high power. To make things worse, a lot of dragonmasters will show up as reinforcement, and there are little things you can utilize on the map to stay away from the enemies. Lucia and Bastian, who are low-powered for endgame units, will also show up to make protection more difficult. And since the goal is to reach Geoffrey, you have to do so before he is killed.
One way to get past this map is to find someone to block the left bridge and have other units rush to Geoffrey's side.
(I did try, but it's useless... without Full Guard, this map is just unbeatable.)

{Spoiler}
This video's shown most of the points:
- He's an enemy that moves when anyone enters his range, yet his battle line talks about hitting the opponent of the hill.
- He is a dragonmaster. What makes him think the Bolt Axe is a good weapon for him?
- He has Resolve, which raises strength, skill and speed when his HP is halved. And no, magic is not raised.
- His attack is quite low. He'll probably do no damage to Rhys, and doesn't do well with people like Soren, Mist and Tanith, either.
- And his subordinates can kill him with the rolling rocks.
- He drops the Bolt Axe, which nobody would bother to use since the playable axe users can't get their magic to that high anyway.
- Heh heh...ha ha ha... Gather as many fools as you like...your weakness cannot survive... No one on this earth can withstand the might...of our king... Ggghhhaaaa...
- As he's a Daein general, he has conversation with a lot of people - Tauroneo, Haar, Jill, Lethe, Mordecai, Muarim, Ranulf, Janaff, Ulki, Reyson, Tanith and Ike. All exchanges are one-sided.

{Spoiler}Early in the game, there's a scene in which Liz complains about the smell of the bear they just hunted down for food, and Frederick would encourage her to take the meat. But later on, somewhere in the game, it is revealed that he isn't used to having wild animals as meat, either.
Even later on, he earned this pun-name "フレデ肉" which he didn't like - but fans sure do.Alright, now for some more...
