Spoilers for new characters in Super Smash Bros. {Smash new characters (July 2014)}New character! Who could that be? Well... see for yourself. When I saw Robin at first, I mistook it as Grima. He just looked omnious for some reason. Must be his wind magic. Official site for the full line up so far: www.smashbros.com/There is a whopping 35 of them now, excluding Mii characters.

I was going to say that some might rage for having the male Robin only, until the end, lol. This SSB seems to have a lot of FE characters.

Given that Smash 3DS/Wii U features lots of customizable characters and they offer gender options, I'd say one would automatically assume the female Robin is playble once the male one is shown. I expect to see several pre-made hairstyles and colours too.

Neato~ Seeing that adding FE characters was a growing trend, I suspected as much that they would add Awakening characters sooner or later. I'd love to see how Lucina tosses people though in the future XD

I'm going to be the rebel and say that I'm disliking this roster so far. I understand that FE 13 generally has more fans and therefore the roster expands, according but seriously. I rather have them bring back the veterans first and then talk about the newcomers. I'm surprised at the inclusion of the magic tomes though. Well, onward to the next barrage of Marth clones. m.imgur.com/hd2wDJK

Well, Roy... there's nothing special about him in the context of FE. He's the son of the most laughable FE lord ever, and his inclusion in Smash makes sense only in Melee, which was out before his own game. After that and what made him special was lost, he really was just a Marth clone that did not even feel like himself - you just can't associate that voice and mannerism to FE6 Roy. At least Lucina has all the reasons to be a Marth clone (or alternate model, but both are actually more or less the same).
To me, preferring Roy over the later characters is like declaring to be more of a Smash fan than an FE fan. Some may disagree, and I can understand that too; but that's my take on it.

I'm not sure how I feel about Robin or Lucina yet - I'm the rare FE fan who hasn't played Awakening. The most I did was watch my friend play it and commented on how he killed a recruitable character.
I'm just happy that Ike is back. I was sure he would have been kicked out in favour of Chrom. I'm still stupidly attached to Tellius.

If you haven't played Awakening, um... Lucina is a walking spoiler, much like what Sheik in Melee did to Zelda: Ocarina of Time. She's a major Marth fangirl and cosplayer, which explains why she looks like that. Robin is what FE4~5 players would know as a Mage Fighter, which is basically a Mage promotion that can also use swords. In Smash, Robin possesses several FE (but particularly Awakening) mechanics, such as weapon durability and how characters would gang up on enemies. Smash players may find Robin unorthodox, but I'm glad we finally have a proper FE fighter that actually showcases the games, unlike the slower-than-he-should Ike. (And yes, I hope they make Ike faster this time.)

I didn't know about the Mage Fighters since my experience goes back to FE 7 and on. I just thought Robin was special. I do like the tomes in Smash though. It was something that I always dismissed as being practical in the game, but Robin seems to handle it well. I just hope he doesn't shout the spell every time he uses it like he did in the trailer. I'm hoping that the trailer did that just to identify the spells that would be in the game. And Ike can stand to be faster.

Robin was special in just FE13 in that he's one of the few members that can access that Tactician class, a new FE13 class that feels similar to the Mage Fighter class (but with flat stat caps instead of skewing towards magic) and is the one depicted in the trailer. He's not the only one that uses the physical weapon + tome combo, though.
Robin probably won't shout the spells in-game. In the trailer, he's shown to use basic Thunder twice but shouted it only once.

To me, preferring Roy over the later characters is like declaring to be more of a Smash fan than an FE fan. Some may disagree, and I can understand that too; but that's my take on it. I wasn't specifically pointing to Roy, mind you. I think many can agree most of the Smash veterans aren't even announced: Falco, Ness and Lucas, Ice Climbers, etc. And regarding FE, if they could promote Little Mac from an assistant to a full-fledged Smasher, then they can do the same with Lyn. And she's female to boot. And doesn't look like Marth: win-win situation. And finally, this IS Smash Bros so I understand why people want Roy back: they're used to using him as a character and they don't need to play him game to understand that his father was a joke and that he was actually one of the weakest lord, aside from Leif. (Hey, getting Roy back was one of the many reasons Project M was created. And wooo, people love this guy!) Mind you, most Marth players don't know his background to an extent as well: FE 1 and 3 were in Japanese, FE 11 was a complete joke and FE 13 wasn't localized, so as far as your point that's FE-based, it's pretty moot. What I do feel is that this installment is generating "fan-service" to pull in the non-Smash players into playing Smash Bros. If you're going to include the same characters, then the same people are gonna play it and it won't expand the market. Honestly, it was like the same with FE13. How many people did you know played FE13 VS the older versions? Anyways, I can go on, but I'm on the subway towards home and am too tired to continue typing on my phone... Edit: On the topic of Ike, I think he'll be just as slow, if not, slower since his speed stat in RD is worse than his stat in PoR. Oh well... And Lucina's blade is more balanced? Like... Roy? (This is the Smasher Vikki speaking of course.)

My, this is hard to reply to... Say too much and it will look like a debate when I don't mean to start one; say too little and I won't be able to express myself properly. Ah, those veterans. I honestly don't know why aren't they announced, but it's a question that will solve itself in two months anyway, as Smash 3DS is going to be out then. Maybe they wanted to have surprises, or maybe they're hidden characters this time. Generally speaking, Smash-related announcements, both Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, are rather chaotic. They definitely can be handled better. I don't know if you've read the reason Lucina made it to the roster. Basically speaking, she started off as a Marth alt. In a sense, she's an exception, not the norm; and like clones in general, her non-inclusion won't be compensated in any way (i.e. you won't get a different non-clone character because the development resource simply isn't there). And this is my take on Roy and the old characters. It's a long read that isn't quite on topic (since you originally just brought up returning characters), so I put it away in a block. {Roy and returning characters}Yes, I can understand Smash fans clamouring for Roy to show up, and that they don't need to know his background to enjoy him as a Smash character. It's just that, from an overall FE series fan's perspective, there are better things to do than reviving Roy, including what has been done this time. A non-clone Roy simply can't win over Robin (who's a better demonstration of what FE is about), so the only contestant here is Lucina, who wasn't even planned to be a clone to begin with. She still takes less effort to make than Roy would.
But let's throw the resource thing away and say they have enough resources to make all the newcomers as well as the Melee cuts, and let's further assume that they'll just use Melee's motion and program data so that the "it can still be a better character" argument doesn't hold. To me, the cut characters - and particularly Roy and Pichu - still need to undergo some sort of reworking. Roy didn't feel like himself (neither did Marth and Ike, but their cases are better), so if anything, he should be given a different voice. He needs to behave less fiery, and if possible, he should be given a better reach regardless of his sword's physical length. Project M did differentiate him from Marth, but he still doesn't feel like himself. And one thing about old characters in Smash is that if they have any problems regarding moves and other settings in previous Smash entries, they're likely to carry over (the new games did fix characters like Luigi, Kirby and Bowser, but less apparent issues, like Captain Olimar keeping his Final smash despite the game having a separate Dolphin Bomb item, still continue to exist). Brawl didn't get Ganondorf right, after all; and the Links still share Specials and Final Smashes in 3DS/Wii U despite the Zelda series is known for its vast arsenal. Should old characters like Roy return, they'll continue to not feel like themselves. I'm hoping this doesn't happen to Falco, Wolf or Ganondorf this time.
And one reason I'm supportive of Robin and Lucina (and most other newcomers) is that they didn't screw up the characters' personalities and moves (Lucina being a Marth clone is fine, since there isn't anything wrong with Marth's moves, either). This is one thing Smash 3DS/Wii U really did improve, and I'm glad they finally got Fire Emblem in Smash right. In a hypothetical game where everyone who has ever shown up in any Smash returns, I'll welcome everyone, of course; but Robin and Lucina - and Little Mac and Mega Man - will still get my vote before "everyone look at me" Marth and "no sympathy" Ike, let alone fiery Roy. Or Falco with Landmaster.
I guess it all boils down to whether it should appeal to fans of the original series versus fans of Smash itself. It's not wrong to prefer one over another (just because it's "not original" doesn't automatically make it bad), but personally, I'm more of an FE fan than a Smash fan (and one that's geared towards FE10/12/13, so this lineup suits me fine), and I generally want Smash to better reflect the games they draw inspirations from and not to "stereotype" or misinterpret them. Don't give Luigi a "dark" identity for no apparent reason, don't make Cook look like it's actually that good of a Kirby ability, don't make Fire Emblem look like it's just about sword fighting, and so on.
Again, I'm not saying there's anything wrong in wanting to see Roy or any of the Smash veterans, it's just that my opinion on the characters in general is different. They do need to manage character announcement better though; I agree with that. In short: I like Smash characters to feel like themselves which, added to my general preference towards FE over Smash, means that Roy, at least in his Melee form, is unfavoured by me; but any opinion that says he and the other returning characters should have had priority would be just as valid. FE13 tried to appeal to both fans and non-fans. It did so at the expense of certain parts that core fans liked, but I don't think they're outright ignored. If that is the case, they wouldn't have bothered to combine elements like the world map and the marriage system - while they do appeal to the new fans, they're also from the very same old FE series that fans knew and loved. I do know why some old fans don't like FE13 though. I'm a fan of both, and I do really hope the good parts of both can somehow merge. Like an FE10 remake with FE13's more balanced (non-DLC) stat caps and a world map. I dunno. So yeah... I can see why there are fans who don't like where Smash Bros. (or just about any game franchise) is heading to, but personally speaking, I think it's just fine. And sorry if it sounds like a rant; I'm not complaining about anything at all, I'm just horrible at summarizing stuff. Oh, and on Lucina's blade's property: It's balanced in the sense that hitting enemies from any part of the sword will deal the same damage. So it's like Link and everyone else. In Melee, Roy was Marth's opposite, with the central part of the sword (closer to Roy himself, in other words) dealing more damage.

Vikkers, the fact that you do that on a phone is amazing to me. Mine is a piece of garbage when it comes to be anything but an alarm or a tool for basic communication.
As for some of the veteran characters, though they are unannounced, some are basically confirmed just because the game is confirmed. I didn't understand why some people were worried about Captain Falcon. He was there since the beginning - it would stupid to take him out now. Same thing with Ness.
But I still don't really see any problems with the roster but that's just me. There are obviously some characters I'm not exactly happy with - namely Pacman and Rosalina - but there are enough characters in it that I do like and see myself playing with. For me, it's not a matter of when I can afford the game. I guess I'm just easy to please.
All the same though, I think the best part about Smash is learning about new characters that I wouldn't really think about, but that's also a double edged sword. You will have people that won't bother to research anything. I remember yelling at someone because from Smash (and then just by looks) alone, they assumed that Marth and Ike were brothers. Smash was what introduced me to Fire Emblem, namely through Ike and do some research about him, and suddenly I needed Path of Radiance. If Smash can introduce people to other characters like Little Mac, then it's all good to me.

Still posting on my phone since I'm at work and I'm waiting for the Dept of the Treasury to pick up my phone call.
I also don't want to quote cause that'll just take up a lot of space and you'll need to scroll. At least, on a phone.
I do agree that looking at different perspectives is a game-cincher for liking Smash. It's a really controversial topic.
But I believe that Smash wasn't design to keep a lot of characters, well... in-character.
All the princesses are kicking ass when they're normally getting kidnapped and caged, we have a racer who hip thrusts and have crotch explosions, etc. Pokemon Trainer Red got a personality when he didn't even have one in his own game.
And honestly, who would want a fabulous, sparkly King ruling their country?
Super Smash Bros should be a separate entity in my opinon. Even though the characters are from other games, the characters in Smash has their own personalities. Of course, we need their fundamental backgrounds as well. That's why if I'm talking about Smash, I want to talk about it as a Smash fan. Of course, if someone insults a character or their background then we'll see it at their franchises' point. Then again, Smash is just a fighting game, not about their personalities and whatnot. Well, you get to see some of it in Subspace Emissary but some of the personalities still conflict with their own games (PIT.)
About Lucina, I would've preferred it if she was an alt Marth costume, but apparently she had "something different" and made it to the roster. I do understand about Robin though as s/he is the one you connect with right off the bat.
And FE13. This is a pretty controversial game as well. And when I mean "fan-service" based, I literally mean fan-service. Just look at theit outfits and DLCs. And yeah, there are some elements that make it connect with the older games. And FE fans play it out of loyalty, like any fans would with their game franchises. Granted, yeah, some older FE fans loved the game, but people look at things differently. And FE 13 generated most of the fans that are in FE. And maybe they're playing the older versions b/c they liked the DLCs.
But in summary, I do know you're one of the absolute FE-dedicated fanboy in the world, YL and I cannot sway you in regards to FE, but as a Smash player... like I said in the beginning, I'm going to be a rebel like some, if not most, veteran Smash players and shake my head at the roster. Thank goodness I main in Marth, who wasn't, and hopefully, won't be cut from the roster in the future. And I do prefer him sparkly and fabulous b/c who doesn't like getting their ass kicked by a fabulous King? And yes, I'm not too fond of Marth in his own game, but from the way I look at it: Smash Bros is kind of like an alternate gateway for the characters.
And hurray to all of the Yuri-loving fans b/c the Palutena x Lucina ship has sailed ever since she was announced. How's that for Smash-verse?

Well, maybe b/c I'm still on my phone. Well, the Smash fans are worried b/c god knows what Sakurai is thinking in his mind. A lot of people were pissed about Mewtwo, Dr. Mario and Roy when Brawl came out (Apparently they didn't have enough time to finish?). Not so much as to Young Link and Pichu though. At least I haven't unearthed that part of the fandom yet. I do agree you get to experience new franchises and, in return, get derped-out Smash fans who run their mouths without knowledge of the franchises. But people tend to associate themselves with what they're familiar with and then go research new things. That basically how Roy x Marth came about. Overall, to be off-topic, Nintendo in general is trying too hard. I mean, I understand as business you want to generate as much revenue and keep it alive, but sometimes you need to take a step back and reconsider your steps. The new Zelda game? I scream copy-cat. Why? So many hack-and-slash games are generating a ton of revenue. So why not? Of course, this is based on the trailers and what not. Overall, Vikki has been looking at things at a realistic levels with all the business people she's coming in contact with. And I still make soooo many mistakes on my phone. It's so cringe-worthy.

Let's see there...
I'm fine with characters given new personalities and moves when they don't have any. That applies to things like making Falcon a martial artist, Sheik a ninja and the Wii Fit Trainer a killer-ish health freak. It's the part that they give conflicting personalities that I find jarring. The difference is that with characters like Falcon and Sheik, you can't do anything better about them without ditching the character altogether, at which point I'd say it's okay not to stay true to the source materials. (Greninja's less excusable, though.)
People generally don't do research upon deciding what they think the characters and games are, which is why I want to see them not to change too much in Smash. Smash is a different world altogether, but players would associate them to their original selves. People do actually get disappointed to see FE11 Marth (granted, FE11 is a horrible game) because he doesn't feel (or even look) like Smash Marth.
On the subject of FE11, in the Iwata Asks of that game (where Iwata was absent and replaced by Sakurai), Sakurai said he'd have used the FE11 design if he had known about the game earlier. Thankfully, FE12 came out and Marth didn't have to change as much between Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, appearance-wise.
I think Smash players care about Mewtwo the most, then Roy. Pichu would be after that (with some saying the self-damaging mechanism should go), and Dr. Mario was dividing (some saw him as a better Mario, others thought they're too similar even by clone standard). Few seemed to care about Young Link. Some said they wanted to see Toon Link having a Young Link alt, but I don't even know how can that happen when they don't even have the same head ratio. I ditched both Links in the transition from Melee to Brawl, by the way.
If you think Nintendo is trying too hard, I'd say it's at least better than the other publishers, with whom many classics simply are no longer active. There are a lot of things about Nintendo that I don't agree with, but overall they're good. They didn't just ditch their old IPs altogether to make room to those Wii whatever games, for starters. As for Hyrule Warriors, it's not like it's going to replace traditional Zelda or anything. (You do know there's an upcoming Wii U Zelda, right?)

In general, we're gonna go back and forth without any closure, but that's fine with me. I'm at home with my laptop. Mostly, personality-wise, it is mostly up to the fans to interpret as well (Hello Pixiv!). And honestly, when you're playing a game were four people beat the crap out of each other, you don't think about personality. Smash Bros became the way it is, because (once again, business) they wanted people to play it so they incorporated well-known characters in it. Hell, FE 1 & 3 and even 12's Marth doesn't feel like Smash Marth. To put it bluntly, awkwardzombie.com/index.php?page=0&comic=030909I do know Sakurai wanted to use FE 11's costume. Fans would've punched him. As for Ike... well, you get more points for arguing Smash Bros botched his personality up somewhat. But then again, American versions botch up a lot of translations so the Japanese version is "cooler sounding." And Roy. Roy's a special case because he came out in Smash before his own game. So one can argue that his Smash personality is the "original." He did have flames when using the Sword of Seals. You know what would be funny? If they botched up Lucina and Robin's personality IN the game. The trailer makes them seem cool, yeah, but you'll never know what's gonna happen in the game. Even Chrom got his face planted in the ground and Chrom fans are probably raging about it, haha. It's too early to say anything. (Cross your fingers everyone!) Regarding Mewtwo, things have definitely calm down about it. More controversy is popping up about FE since the new release. And of course the debate depends on which region you reside in. Regardless, I think most people can agree Melee is the best Smash Bros game so far. And getting off-topic again: I do know that there's a new Zelda game, but people are more hyped about Hyrule Warriors. They're even going nuts about whether Link's a girl or not in the game. Huh. Let's just say: the fans pretty much ruin everything and every fandom. It all boils down to a point: you like it, you get it. You don't? No revenue from you to the companies.

IIRC, Roy's Sword of Seals' flame is actually a reverse import. It got that property in Melee to be distinguished from Marth, and it in turn made it back to FE6. And yeah, Roy, at least in Melee, didn't really have any original sources to follow, and it's arguable that the Melee one is original. Still want a voice/personality change should he return, though. And I agree on the trailer vs in-game thing; they do look faithful in terms of the attacks they possess, though, so that's one less thing to worry about. I actually don't like how that trailer treated Chrom and basically emphasized how he's not playable; both fans and Smash marketers (especially Sakurai himself, though I think he's just mocking the fans) made too much of a deal out of characters being in Smash or not, and in what capacity. All character rosters can have angry fans who get worked up over them, but this is most apparent in Smash because of its size in everything - potential characters, fans, and more. People are hyped about Hyrule Warriors because new information keep popping out and it's close to release. It's just the nature of fans. And yeah, ultimately, as consumer, we should vote with our wallets. You can cast a half-vote to Smash (since it's two games) if you want to play it but aren't particularly enthusiastic about it

I actually like his hot-headed personality tbh. We don't have many hotheads in Smash Bros. And yeah, his voice is a little low in Melee, but it would fit afterwards. Anyways, wishful thinking about Roy on my end and a lot of Japanese Smash fans if you go on Pixiv.

Lol, this is kind of awkward, and this is making me think that ever since FE13, Marth's world and Ike's world are kinda in the same universe. Unless FE13 is not canon anymore.
The Subhuman comment made me lol.
